Intrusion Inc. uses Cenzic Hailstorm, the first software platform for enterprise-level security quality assurance, for QA testing of its own portfolio of security products.
Aaron Bawcom, Vice President of Software Development for Intrusion Inc, manages use of the Cenzic Hailstorm platform. He has worked with Cenzic Hailstorm for about 18 months and comments on its power and stability.
"To date, Bawcom says, his group has developed about 800 unique Cenzic Hailstorm vulnerability patterns plus variances within those 800 - to test Intrusion's products. "Every time we add a signature to the network IDS, we use Cenzic Hailstorm to run the entire signature regression suite against the product," he explains.
"We also use the product in different types of unit testing as well," he said, including 'false positive' testing. "It's a very good tool for determining what the NIDS is actually seeing on the wire."
Bawcom said that Intrusion would be doing the same type of QA testing if the Cenzic Hailstorm platform did not exist. However, it would be a considerably greater expense to Intrusion to dedicate the resources to manually accomplish what Cenzic Hailstorm performs automatically.
"Everybody has something like this, some type of signature regression," he said. "But why spend the time to develop the same thing internally when it's already available off the shelf in the form of Cenzic Hailstorm?" Bawcom said.
